It’s all about reflectors

13 May
Reflectors are handy pieces of photographic gear which can be used outside and indoors. They fold away nice and small so you can carry them around easily or just leave one in your car. If you dont have an assistant to hold the reflector there is a handy bracket which can hold it for you.
With the 5-in-1 reflector you have the option to either reflect white, gold or silver. Shoot through the translucent middle section or block the light by using the black side. If you are starting out with photography you will learn alot about light because a reflector shows you where the light is falling.
Lets look at some of the uses for reflectors:1. If you are taking an portrait image outside and your subject is not well lit (shadows on the face). You can use the reflector to fill in those shadows.2. You can use the reflector to bounce your flash against. Your flash is a small light source. When you bounce the flash against the reflector, it becomes the new larger lightsource which will give you softer light. Look at the video on using a reflector on our youtube channel for more on this. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIpFPJNpPeo)

3. When your shooting natural light indoors. Maybe you have nice window light but you also want fill light on your model from the other side you can use the reflector for this. When you move the reflector from side to side you will notice the reflected light goes softer and harder. The is called feathering the light. You can use this as your power control button :).

4. In the studio reflectors are handy to fill in the shadows. Look at our lastest youtube video for more on this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3bM501rTAE)

5. You can use the handy reflector arm to hold the reflector for you. Then you can shoot light through the translucent section. You can also hold the reflector above you to bounce against in a large area where you are unable to bounce. Word of warning that in windy conditions the large reflector becomes like a power kite, use a strong tripod with good support like heavy sandbags to keep the stand on the gound. Below is an image of the reflector attached to the reflector arm.

On the two You tube videos we took some pics outide and in the studio, below are some of the result for closer inspection as the video is just to fast.Outdoors with our Cosplay model Yamaki:
